Tempurpedic Mattress

I slept on a Tempur-Pedic® mattress once and I hated it!

I sold Tempurpedic mattresses for many years and heard many objections. So, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you, from the salesperson’s perspective, why Tempurpedic mattresses are so good and answer some common misconceptions.

Common Tempurpedic Misconceptions

Tempurpedics Sleep Hot– Tempurpedic was consistently my top selling brand, and most importantly, my least returned brand. In almost a decade of selling Tempurpedic, never once did I get one back because of heat. There is nothing about the mattress itself that generates heat. In fact, the Tempur® material actually supports you so well, you are less likely to sink into the mattress, unlike many lower density knockoffs and traditional soft innerspring mattresses. As long as you allow your body to adjust and rethink your covers and environment, you will actually experience better air flow while sleeping on top of a Tempurpedic, and not sunk deep inside some super pillowtop. But if you are a very hot natured person, that will not change no matter what mattress you purchase. But the benefits of proper alignment, no pressure points and durability may outweigh any heat issues.

Tempurpedic Mattresses Are Expensive – Are you replacing an uncomfortable mattress every 5 years? If so, you will probably pay for a Tempurpedic after your 2nd mattress purchase. Of all the major brands I have sold, Tempurpedic is the most likely to provide a satisfactory comfort life for the entire warranty period (20 years). Depending on the model, that works out to about 30¢ a night. That sounds pretty good to me. And besides, they are very comparable in price to the upper levels of the “S Brands” or any luxury mattress.

As far as pricing goes, Tempurpedic has a minimum price on every mattress that most retailers follow. This makes it really easy on the customer because they can focus on comfort and not drive all over town to save $50. This is also why many salespeople don’t want to sell them. Many will try and push knockoffs or talk negatively about Tempurpedics because their commissions are much lower when they sell a Tempurpedic. Keep that in mind while you are doing your mattress shopping.

Unlike most major brands, Tempurpedic does not have a different name for basicaly the same mattress in different stores. From a consumer standpoint, this is awesome. The mattress industry is notorious for seeding confusion by this practice and I applaud Tempurpedic for putting a stop to this insanity.

I Don’t Want A Foam Bed – So, would you prefer to sleep on steel springs? What materials do you think are placed in traditional beds? Yep, you guessed it, foam. There is always resistance to something new. High density foam – latex and memory foam is the future. Ten years ago, there was one Tempurpedic on the floor. Now, the noninnerspring category takes up about 25% of most stores. The human body should not sleep on steel springs. It is almost impossible to build a mattress with springs and comfort layers that will work for everyone, much less a couple with different support/comfort needs. If you simply do not like the feel, innerspring is your only option, but be prepared to compromise.

I Slept On A Tempurpedic Once And Hated It– My first question is did you really sleep on a Tempurpedic? There are so many companies trying to piggyback on Tempurpedic’s success that the market is flooded with memory foam mattresses. And from my experience, there are a lot of really bad memory foam products being sold. A different density, feel, structure, cover etc can yield a very different performance.

And with Tempurpedic, more so than most mattresses, you need time to adjust. Give the mattress at least 30 days before you make a decision. Find a store that allows you to exchange/return it within the first 90 days. Just like shoes, the mattress and you need to adjust to each other. After a few weeks, you will start to notice a huge improvement in your sleep and energy level.

Why Tempurpedic Mattresses Work – Solving the Top Sleep Issues

Durability – The big valleys that develop on innerspring mattresses over time are known as body impressions. The soft comfort layers are designed to compress around your body. In time, these will get deep enough that your body will be out of alignment, or you will be too close to the innerspring causing pressure and pain, especially in the hip and shoulder area.

The Tempur® material is designed to remember ITS shape not yours. This is a huge benefit to the consumer who doesn’t want to experience big valleys and a ridge down the middle of their mattress. Their warranty, one of the best in the industry, covers any impression greater than 3/4″. For traditional mattresses, you have to get down 1 1/2″ before the warranty kicks in. It doesn’t take much to throw your spine out of alignment.

Hypoallergenic – Tempurpedic is naturally resistant to dust mites and most mattress related allergens. I would still recommend using a waterproof, breathable, mattress protector to keep any spills out of your mattress. But the protector must be very thin and breathable or else the Tempur material will not perform at an optimum level. Do not use a traditional quilted mattress pad because it will greatly reduce the conforming properties of the mattress.

Another nice feature is unlike traditional mattresses, a stain will not void your warranty. But it is always wise to keep the mattress clean and healthy with a waterproof protector.

Motion Transfer/Rolling Together – Tempurpedics absorb energy. What that means is you can move, get out of bed or change position without disturbing your spouse. With most innerspring mattresses, the slightest movement is transferred throughout the mattress disturbing the sleep of the other person. This is not the case with Tempurpedic.

Another nice benefit is you can sleep next to a heavier spouse and not feel like you are rolling down a hill. With most innersprings, the closer you get to another person, the more the mattress tries to suck you into the valley they created. This can lead to improper support and bad alignment.

Alignment/Pressure Points– No other mattress does a better job of getting the body properly aligned without any pressure points. Tempur material is designed to conform to the exact level of support for each body type regardless of size and weight of the person. Since there are no springs pushing up, there is virtually no pressure. Once the body is properly aligned and experiencing no pressure issues, you can sleep more soundly in the same position.

With traditional mattresses, its a guessing game. Too many comfort layers and you are out of alignment. Too little, unbearable pressure points causing you to toss and turn all night.

I do not own stock in the company and they are not my employer. This post is merely meant to be informative. My goal with every customer was to improve their sleep. I found over time – literally thousands of times, Tempurpedic exceeded the expectations of nearly every customer. About the only reason I saw a Tempurpedic customer again was to thank me, buy another Tempurpedic, upgrade or bring a family member or friend in to purchase one for themselves. I cannot make that claim about any other brand I have sold.

If you are serious about improving your sleep, give Tempurpedic a try. It is the best mattress on the market IF you like the way it feels. Comfort will always trump everything else.
