Memorial Day Mattress Sale

Yep, its that time again. The start of the summer buying season. From Memorial Day through Labor Day is when the majority of income is made in the mattress industry. There are many reasons for this including graduations, weddings, divorces, new home purchases and the start of the school year. All of these seem to trigger mattress purchases and are more frequent in the Summer months. Also, advertising expenditures go significantly up during the big three holidays – Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day.

Now we could argue which came first the shoppers or the sales, but it really doesn’t matter. More people shop for beds during the Summer months.

Which leads me to the point of this post. I am often asked when is the best time to buy a mattress. If you asked most salespeople, they would tell you right now. And they would not be too far from the truth. When you need a new mattress is always the best time. As I said before, the sales prices do not change that much throughout the year. And, there is always a sale. But before you gasp at that revelation, consider the industry point of view. If you buy a mattress every 10 years, when it is time to replace that beat up bag of coils, you will spend about 48 hours shopping for a new mattress. If there is NOT a sale, you will simply move on to the next store. Mattress retailers have to always have some sort of promotion or else they risk losing your business for another decade.

If you are waiting for the next “big sale” you may be disappointed. There might be a few mattress sets that are marked down as loss leaders, but these typically are not of the highest quality. Another interesting twist I have observed, sometimes prices are LOWER, the weeks before and after a big sale like Memorial Day. Why? Because that is when traffic dries up. The industry knows they will see a ton of traffic on Memorial weekend. But the days before and after, the salespeople go stir crazy with boredom. They would much rather be selling you the mattress of your dreams during these slow periods.

Here is something else to consider. During a busy Memorial Day Mattress Sale, you may not get the personalized attention from a store inundated with crazy shoppers. To get the very best mattress that fits YOUR body, you need the complete attention of a competent mattress professional.

Quite frankly, I would prefer spending time with the family at the lake or out camping on Memorial Day weekend. But if you like fighting the crowds at the mattress shop, by all means go for it. I’m sure they will be happy to see you.

One final plea on behalf of mattress professionals. If you have a mattress problem, or just need information, and neither is a life or death situation, please be considerate and save it until after the holiday. If the salesperson has to choose between four or five customers ready to spend money, or someone wanting to vent about the mattress they bought four years ago, unfortunately, I’m pretty sure I know who wins in that situation. Come back after the holiday and you will get the salesperson or manager’s full attention and a quick solution to your issue.
