Tempurpedic Sleeps Hot

No topic gets me more fired up than the rumor that Tempur-Pedic® mattresses make you sleep hot. There are seemingly hundreds of sites dedicated to this topic and when it gets time to offer a solution, you guessed it, its a visco elastic knock off.

First off, I sleep on a Tempur-Pedic and have for almost 6 months now. I live in a very warm climate where triple digits are the norm throughout the Summer. I am also extremely hot natured. I would start perspiring with a brisk walk through the house. I am actually cooler on my Tempur-Pedic than I was on the innerspring mattress I had before. The reason you ask? It makes perfect sense.

On a traditional innerspring mattress you have layers of FOAM and fiber stacked to achieve the desired feel. The majority if not all of these elements are dreadfully poor in the area of breathability. They are also generally not very good at keeping you properly aligned. So think about this for a moment. You are sinking deep into a mattress and layers of foam and fiber are wrapping around your body reducing the bodies ability through air flow and evaporation to cool itself. And since the body is out of alignment and experiencing stress, naturally that causes an increase in blood pressure and raises your body temperature even more.

Now let’s go back to Tempur-Pedic for a moment. There are literally hundreds of folks I have watched over the years test Tempur-Pedics, and I have never seen someone not be aligned properly on their mattresses. They are always ON the mattress, not IN it. I can not make that bold statement about any other brand or type of mattress. With the body only sinking to the degree necessary for proper support, the air flow around the body should be very good – as long as you don’t go nuts with covers.

Why do people continually claim that Tempur-Pedics are hot? Here are some of the reasons and explanations I have uncovered through the years.

1. They tried a memory foam product and assumed it was Tempur-Pedic. There are hundreds of knock off memory foam products flooding the market. Tempur-Pedic has been very successful and everyone wants a piece of the action. The problem is that the vast majority of them are dreadful. Depending on the density and cell structure, you may never get the proper support or the breathability that you get with a Tempur-Pedic on an inferior knock off. I would dare say of the many folks that came to see me with this complaint, a good 45% fell into this category.

2. They slept one night and it was hot. Another 20% fall into this category. If you sleep on a Tempur-Pedic only one or two nights, there is a good chance you may not like it. I tell everyone to give it a minimum of 30 nights before you make up your mind. Find a store that allows returns or exchanges for 90 days or so and spend 30 nights on it. Your body needs that time to adjust to proper alignment, pressure free sleep and most importantly, better circulation that can increase core temperature. All those are good things for your body. But if you quit after two nights, your body has not adjusted to the new mattress. People who gave the mattress at least 30 days RARELY came back and NEVER for heat issues.

3. They are simply very hot natured. About 10% of all people report sleeping hot regardless of what they sleep on. If you are an extremely hot natured person, that may not change no matter what mattress you get. But if you choose Tempur-Pedic, you will be getting the very best alignment and pressure relief on the market. You may have to rethink the amount of covers or your habits (late night eating and exercise can be factors in warmer sleep) as I did, but the benefits of proper support and quality of sleep, I promise you, will trump any temperature issue.

4. 20% are working from advice they got from a friend, family or the Internet. As I have written before, be careful what you read online. The vast majority of “Tempur-Pedic Sleeps Hot” sites are designed for one reason, to sell you their knock off. Some of the sites are disguised quite well with fake testimonies. Also, friends and families are nice, but there are not two people on this planet that are just alike. Their needs and experiences are going to greatly differ from yours. And, they may fall into groups 1 and 2 and have not really ever tested a Tempur-Pedic in the first place. Numerous times I have heard this objection only to see the person or couple buy a Tempur-Pedic and a few months later bring their friends and family in to buy their very own.

5. The final 5% are generally using that as an excuse because they do not want to pay the price for a Tempur-Pedic or have an ulterior motive – they were told to buy an air bed, latex or some knock off special. If Tempur-Pedic is not in your budget now, that is not a problem. Save up your money and get one later. I would probably go with an inexpensive innerspring product before wasting money on a mattress that claims it is “just as good as a Tempur-Pedic.” If the other mattress manufacturers could at least match their quality, that would be a huge success. Until then, avoid the knock offs.

If you are truly interested in improving the quality of your sleep, I encourage you to at least give Tempur-Pedic a fair try. I think you will be very happy in the end.

BTW – I do not work for Tempur-Pedic or own any stock in the company. However, you may see Tempur-Pedic ads on this site – along with many other manufacturers. These are served by Google and I have no control over which ads appear at any given time.

PLEASE NOTE: The Tempur-Pedic Cloud Supreme that I sleep on, or any Tempur-Pedic mattress, may not be the right mattress for you. I do believe that Tempur-Pedic makes some of the best products on the market today. But please do not buy a mattress based on someone else’s experience. You need to try each mattress and determine which one will be the best support and comfort for YOUR BODY.

Happy Mattress shopping!!
