The Stearns & Foster products are completely different from even 10 years ago. The old S&Fs had a very rigid innerspring 12.75 gauge and they really had no soft options. That is why they tended to last a long time. Unfortunately, we are getting bigger and softer and are more likely to sleep on our sides than we were in the past. The new S&Fs have a Marshall coil structure, and the Estate level has a variation called the Intellicoil. An S&F retailer of any size should have firm and ultra firm in both categories. Short of you going and trying them out, there is really no way of telling you which one will work. Every store will have their own model names. Try it on your back, side and in your natural sleep position for at least 2 minutes. Make sure you have the option of exchange, or possibly a return. Until you spend 30 nights on it, you will not know for sure. The firm S&Fs are some of the MOST returned because people want the bed they bought a decade ago and that is not possible. If you spend any amount of time on your side during the night, do not buy a firm. You will regret it.

30 years ago, my mother taught me to buy only the Stearns and Foster Correct Comfort Supreme mattresses - they had a cotton ticking, were ultrafirm. I still have a full size one that my son is using without any complaint. It's time to buy new mattresses, and I would like to find something equivalent - very firm, durable, not too high profile. Any recommendations?

My husband and I have slept on the YuMe bed for several months. We both love it! For all the beds we used in the past 10 years, YuMe bed provides the best supports. In addition, the heat and cool function is fabulous. In the hot summer, it cools me down and in the cold winter night, it comforts and relaxes me with a warm sleep. I highly recommend YuMe to anyone!

We purchased the YuMe 600 a couple of months ago. We saw it at the TX State Fair and we were so impressed that we had it shipped to Oklahoma. The bed was too firm at first, but the sales team gave us tips to take care of that. I had never had a memory foam bed, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. The YuMe has exceeded every expectation I had. For the past several years I have had back pain when I wake in the morning. I assumed this was something I had to get used to. In the few weeks we have had the YuMe, the pain has almost completely disappeared. Mattress Firm allows you to try the bed for 90 days. The bed was so hard when we got it, that I figured we would be returning it. There is no way I would part with my bed now!

Virtually all foam beds, aside from latex, are some type of polyurethane. The majority of memory foam beds, including Tempur-Pedic fall into this category. I am a big fan of Tempur material as I have blogged often - that is what I sleep on. I have sold most of the major manufacturers knock-offs with dreadul results - sagging, poor alignment and generally lots of returns and unhappy customer experiences. There are hundreds of manufacturers out there and I have not tried every one. I would strongly caution you about foam beds that are not from Tempur-Pedic. From my experience, I have seen few that are worth a darn. But if the comfort is right along with the price, go for it. Make sure you understand the exchange and return policy. If you cannot return or exchange it with minimal hurdles, don't buy it.

Hi,
I have found your website to be very helpful. I noticed in this mattress selection article you do not say anything about poured polyurethane foam mattresses. I slept on a Marriott bed for two nights that was so comfortable that I took off the bedding to find out what kind of mattress it was - it was a 7" foam polyurethane mattress. I am looking to recreate that experience, except would prefer to purchase from a local retailer rather than shop marriott (steep delivery charges and no trial period policy). Some people have recomended latex as the better quality foam mattress, but I do not find it at all to be the same - I found that even the showroom models of 100% talalay, "custom made" (e.g. not mass produced) latex beds that were 1-3 years old were already experiencing softening where people had tried them out, such that the sides were slightly sloped towards the edge of the bed, and the middle was firmer. The Marriott bed I slept on in 2011 was built in 2002, and showed no signs of sagging/softening. I was wondering what your opinion is of poured polyurethane foam mattresses, and what some good options are available on the general market. Thank you.
