Purple Mattress

There are bed in a box mattresses named after fruit, friendly ghosts, and insects, so why not a color?

The Purple® Mattress line was launched in 2015 by Tony and Terry Pearce in Utah. They had previously manufactured pressure relieving materials for health related items like wheelchairs. This experience made them uniquely qualified to create a mattress that is very different from the rest.

Purple manufactures mattresses, seat cushions, back cushions, pillows and other products made of a proprietary material called “hyper-elastic polymer” which provides support and dissipates heat – two essential qualities of a quality mattress. And believe it or not, the material is purple!

Supports, conforms, and keeps cool.

In an industry where, quite frankly, there is little innovation, Purple created something quite unique. The grid is flexible to the touch, incredibly durable, and resistant to the typical heat problems encountered by many specialty mattresses.

In fact, I think Purple is the MOST innovative mattress to hit the market since Tempur-Pedic®. The challenge of every mattress is giving support and comfort, without pressure or heat. Tempur® material did this successfully, and of course every foam manufacturer suddenly started making memory foam mattresses – some good, some just plain bad. And then came the hybrids, blending innersprings and memory foam.

Purple is something completely different. The elastic grid is combined with foam for their entry level option, and then a Marshall Coil spring unit for 3 other models, adding an inch more depth of the grid for each mattress.

I felt the Original had a “dead” feel. However, the other three feel alive and inviting. Foam beds can be quite difficult to move at times, and this is where Purple shines. The average young person may not care. But if you are 55, its 3 am,  and you need to go to the bathroom, now, the ease at which you can get out of bed is important.

My most successful model was the 3. I felt very little difference between the 2, 3, or 4, so I believe the choice is mostly psychological. Some don’t want the most expensive, nor the firmest, so they opt for the compromise. That was my theory from selling them.

Purple may be a good alternative for seasoned folks with mobility issues that find it too hard to move on foam beds. The grid + springs does make it much easier to get in and out of bed, as well as moving on the mattress surface.

Purple also sells sheets and protectors which are pretty good. I have to admit that the pillow did not work for me, although I was rooting for it.

Queen mattresses start around $1000, and top out under $3,000 during holiday sales. This is an exceptional value for specialty mattresses which can be priced much higher than $3,000.

Some might lament only 4 options, but I see that as a benefit. More choices may not always be a good thing. Make sure you give them a shot the next time you go mattress shopping.

Enjoy your 4th of July Weekend!!
